This season we are delighted to announce the phenomenal pianist Alexander Malofeev as our Artist-in-Residence. He will be playing Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, as well as a fiendishly complex recital featuring music by Bach, Wagner, Scriabin and Rachmaninov.
We also welcome back Kirill Karabits for what will be his last season as Chief Conductor – but rest assured, he will be back as he continues his amazing musical journey discovering long-lost and forgotten Voices from the East, which this season features a tribute to his father Ivan Karabits and a Concerto for Orchestra commemorating two fundamental moments in Ukrainian history. He will also be directing a very special concert performance of Tchaikovsky’s last opera, Iolanta, and brings two more Shostakovich symphonies – Five and Fifteen, as well as symphonies by Borodin and Bruckner. The highlight of the season sees Kirill teamed up with Indian dancer Seeta Patel for an exciting fusion of east and west in a very special choreographed performance of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. This really will be a unique occasion not to be missed.
Mark Wigglesworth returns to conduct an orchestral version of Wagner’s passionate Tristan and Isolde and also brings his interpretation of Beethoven’s mighty Fifth Symphony. We look forward to the return of BSO friends Sunwook Kim, Andrew Litton, Karl-Heinz Steffens, Simon Trpčeski, Veronika Eberle and Valeriy Sokolov and there is a host of debut appearances including Awadagin Pratt, Tianyi Lu, Emila Hoving, Ethan Loch, Eric Lu, Olga Kulchynska, Clara-Jumi Kang and Alena Baeva.
