Musicians from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) bring concerts to rural locations across the South West as the popular ‘BSO On Your Doorstep’ series returns this autumn.

People in Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset will experience live performances in local villages and community centres from Langport, near Taunton, to the New Forest.

Concerts in December will feature a range of festive highlights, including music from The Nutcracker. Communities across Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset can anticipate a plethora of rural concerts this autumn and winter taking place across the region, including Broadwindsor, Langport, Long Sutton, New Milton, Stalbridge and Sydling St Nicholas.

Dorset and Hampshire

The BSO On Your Doorstep performances in Dorset and Hampshire are presented in partnership with Culture in Common and Artsreach, Dorset’s rural touring agency.

The BSO’s Brass Octet travels to Stalbridge, near Sherborne [28 Oct] for a programme of dance inspired music through the ages, ranging from Handel’s Sarabande to Pharell Williams’ Happy.

Explore the world of Curious Creatures in a family friendly concert in New Milton, near the New Forest [12 Nov] — this musical journey explores the many creatures you can find in the great outdoors, featuring such pieces as Mancini’s Baby Elephant Walk and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending .

There’ll be music in Broadwindsor, near Beaminster [19 Nov] with a trio of flute, cello and harp to serenade you in a programme of music through the ages from Bach and Bizet to Ibert and Joni Mitchell, before a Brass Octet travels to Sydling St Nicholas, near Dorchester [30 Nov] for more dance inspired music.

You can also join Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra players for a selection of Christmas Crackers in Sturminster Newton [15 Dec], when a 10 piece mixed ensemble plays such pieces as Carol of the Bells to All I Want for Christmas, to name but a few.

Somerset

There’s plenty to look forward to in Somerset with a 14 piece ensemble kicking things off in Langport [30 Sep] — presented in partnership the The Octagon, Yeovil — with a celebration of the sea, featuring music from Adele’s Rolling in the Deep to Vaughan Williams’ Sea Songs.

Then welcome in Christmas in Long Sutton [9 Dec] with a Brass Christmas Fanfare, an eight piece ensemble who’ll play a selection of joyful well-known festive tunes and wintery classics. The event is supported by the Friends of Long Sutton Church.

Lucy Warren, Head of BSO Participate, said “Our BSO on Your Doorstep concerts present an opportunity for audiences to come and experience something new and different from their local orchestra. From the seasoned concert-goer to those who are completely new to classical music — programmes include well known music alongside lesser-known works from Bach and Adele, to Jessie Montgommery and William Grant Still.

We want to give everyone the chance to experience something new; whether that’s hearing known favourites in a new light through our arrangements, or a new piece of music entirely, all concerts are presented from the stage and give the audience that extra special chance to get to know more about the players and music of their local orchestra.”

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra ensembles to play music in Broadwindsor [19 Nov, Langport [30 Sep], Long Sutton [9 Dec], New Milton [12 Nov], Stalbridge [28 Oct] and Sydling St Nicholas [30 Nov].
