Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has today announced 25 events and workshops with people throughout Cornwall this March, from health and wellbeing experiences to education projects, interactive community performances, and more. The Orchestra will also appear in full symphonic glory at Truro’s Hall for Cornwall [22 Mar] with Principal Guest Conductor Mark Wigglesworth and pianist Ethan Loch.

One of the UK’s best-loved ensembles, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra exists to bring music into people’s lives – and this spring it takes music throughout Cornwall, from community music-making for health and wellbeing to music education workshops, chamber performances and more.

World Premiere tours mines and community centres
Local instrumentalists unite with opera singers and BSO musicians to share a tale of mining, migration, mythology, memories and mischief inspired by conversations at Geevor Tin Mine.

Fault Lines is a brand-new musical interpretation, which draws the audience into the action by encouraging them to join in, sing or play along, or just listen and enjoy.

With music by Luke Styles and words by Hazel Gould, Fault Lines is a BSO production in association with Tête à Tête and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, presented as part of Carn to Cove’s rural touring season.

Performances take place at Wheal Martyn, St Austell [6 Mar]; St Agnes Miners’ and Mechanics’ Institute [7 Mar]; Kresen Kernow, Redruth [8 Mar]; Geevor Tin Mine, Pendeen [9 Mar].

Music-making for health and wellbeing.
A series of life-empowering community music-making activities will take place throughout the county from early March.

The BSO’s popular dementia-friendly Cake Concerts visit Hall for Cornwall in Truro [7 Mar] and Saltash Social Club [8 Mar]; these informal events feature tea, cake, and chatter, to counter isolation and encourage connection. Plus, a duo of BSO players will give performances in 4 care homes in and around Truro [7 Mar].

The BSO’s award-winning team deepens its work in the county in a series of industry workshops with health and well-being practitioners. It presents a day of Creative Health training at Exeter University in Truro [8 Mar] and a Wellbeing Orchestra residency in the centre of Bodmin [7 Mar] with Into Bodmin to host workshops for local residents and health and social care professionals.

Performance opportunities for people of all ages
School pupils of all ages are invited to interact up close and take part in live music-making, when the BSO’s musicians tour schools throughout the month.

The BSO’s professional players and Associate Music Leaders will present workshops with pupils at schools in South East Cornwall [4-5 Mar] before travelling to Redruth [6 Mar] where a 14-piece ensemble and presenter will give a performance that explores the natural world in a schools’ concert designed for Key Stage 1 pupils at Regal Theatre, Redruth [6 Mar], and school assemblies in the area.

Key Stage 4 pupils are invited to take part in a side-by-side playing experience with orchestral musicians, after the BSO’s From West End to Hollywood concert in Saltash [8 Mar].

The talented young musicians of Cornwall Youth Orchestra will experience the thrill of playing alongside professional musicians, when players from the BSO visit Truro High School [23 Mar] for a side-by-side playing day. Plus, there is an opportunity for adult players of all ages to get involved through a Symphony in a Day project in Truro [23 Mar] to perform Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra performances

The Orchestra’s residency is celebrated in a full-scale symphonic performance at Truro’s Hall for Cornwall [22 Mar] when the BSO’s Principal Guest Conductor Mark Wigglesworth unites with pianist Ethan Loch — the rising star who made headlines when he became a Finalist in the BBC’s Young Musician Competition, in 2022. The concert features Verdi’s Force of Destiny overture, Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto, and Beethoven’s Symphony No.5.

Two ‘BSO On Your Doorstep’ chamber-scale performances tour to Redruth Theatre [5 Mar] and with Salt Arts in Saltash [7 Mar] in partnership with Carn to Cove, Cornwall’s rural touring scheme.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Executive, Dougie Scarfe OBE DL, said:
“We’re thrilled to return to Cornwall with the full Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra this spring in a series of events and workshops for people of all ages. We exist to bring music into people’s lives, from the big, celebratory concert hall moments to the school assemblies, and workshops that support health and wellbeing. This spring marks our first full-scale residency in Cornwall since the pandemic; whether you’re looking to get involved as a participant, learn something new, or simply sit back to enjoy the music, we couldn’t be more excited to see you.”
