Can I submit a video with singing, or with backing vocals?
No, vocal performances of any kind are not eligible for this competition – we want to hear your instrument shine!
How long does my video need to be?
Your video must be a maximum of 3 minutes long.
Can I include accompaniment or overlay multi-track performances/videos?
Yes, accompaniment is optional if you feel it will help. Your main performance must be recorded in one live take, but other layers can be added if you feel it would benefit you. Looping software is allowed, if you want to record several layers yourself. Please note, only one main performer will be assessed as a competitor.
Can I enter as a duo or an ensemble?
No, only single entries are allowed. If you have another person playing as your accompanist, this is permitted, but they will not be counted as an entrant, or a winner. You must have their permission before submitting the recording.
Can I play a non-traditional instrument?
Yes! We encourage any and all instrumentalists to enter, no matter what you play, or how you play it.
Can I enter with my own composition?
Yes! We can’t wait to hear what you submit, and want to see your creativity, whether that comes from your own composition, or a piece you already know and love.
Can I enter on behalf of someone else?
No, you must have all the necessary permissions for your video and performance – including its use for the competition’s purposes and sharing on social media – and be able to declare that you are the primary performer featured.
Can I submit multiple entries?
No, each person may only submit one entry to the 2026 BSO Music-Making Competition.
