Explore the Orchestra is available for FREE for local pupils and features a mix of live music – including two interactive songs featuring body percussion and Makaton signs, created in partnership with schools. The participatory songs, which are based on the four elements of the natural world, have been prepared by pupils in Bristol with composer James Redwood, who presents the concerts from the stage.
To enhance learning, classroom teachers have been able to access specialist CPD training and teaching resources, to ensure pupils to get the most out of the events.
Enyi Okpara, the Orchestra’s Calleva Assistant Conductor, conducts the performance. Enyi is known for his passion for bringing orchestral music to life for pupils and was announced as one of Classic FM’s Rising Stars in 2025! The music of our 2025/26 Celebrated Composer, Dani Howard, also features in the concert.
Our pioneering BSO Participate work reaches children and young people beyond the concert hall throughout the year. With workshops and performances tailored for all ages, from infants and primary schools to the most advanced students, we also run a popular tour for SEND schools and run Bournemouth’s National Open Youth Orchestra [NOYO] ensemble.
The BSO’s ‘Explore the Orchestra’ Schools’ Concerts are generously supported by the Skyrme Hart Charitable Trust, Dave & Jan Pointer, the University of Exeter, Christine & Jim Dipple, the VEC Acorn Charitable Trust, and one anonymous supporter.
Explore the Orchestra: Four Elements visits Bristol Beacon on Friday 27 March. The series returns – to Lighthouse, Poole – with four performances on 19-20 May celebrating the human voice with Explore the Orchestra: Sing Out!
