The latest film features the BSO’s Chief Executive, Dougie Scarfe, in conversation with journalist Andy Martin. It is available to watch online from 14 October.
“Music was always at the very centre of the town and it was an important part of the growth of Bournemouth; the Municipal Orchestra and town grew together.” Dougie Scarfe
Discussing the Orchestra’s heritage, Dougie references the pioneering work of Sir Dan Godfrey and the conductor’s close working relationship with composers such as Elgar and Sibelius. The BSO’s mission from its founding roots to the present day is discussed, including its ever-growing work in health and care settings, and its response to the pandemic.
“Everything is BSO — from the concert hall to being on the hospital wards or in a community setting — it’s all equally as important.” Dougie Scarfe
This summer, a series of national press articles celebrated the region’s renaissance as a cultural centre thanks to the addition of a new contemporary art gallery, GIANT. Curated by the multidisciplinary artist Stuart Semple, who is known around the globe for his work, the gallery is a welcome addition to the region’s ever-growing arts scene. GIANT sits within the newly reopened Bobby’s store, one of Bournemouth’s heritage brands. Having closed its doors 50 years ago, the department store now sits in the centre of town in the former Debenhams building — it’s original home.
With a renewed appreciation for the arts now emerging at the centre of our local spaces we look forward to the next great chapter in Bournemouth’s story… and with the BSO continuing to play its part at the heart of this vibrant and ever-evolving community on England’s south coast!
The series of films has been commissioned by Rawlins Davy and is available to watch for free on YouTube.
