Over the last four years the broadcasts have reached an estimated audience of 150,000 and boast regular viewers throughout the UK as well as across the world — reaching people in 118 countries, with the most frequent international viewers in USA, Italy, France, Germany and South Korea.

From early beginnings in September 2020 — with a socially distanced orchestra on the extended Lighthouse stage — to today with an in-house team of four people working on visuals, one on audio, alongside a guest presenter and a professional sound engineer — live broadcasts have become a core part of our offering as an orchestra.

They have also allowed us to capture exciting moments on camera; from horn player Felix Klieser’s UK concerto debut in November 2021, to Stefan Jackiw’s violin bow which snapped mid-performance before going viral in 2023.

Having this digital capability has also given us the opportunity to share performances with audiences far beyond Poole, Dorset, including new works by Anna Korsun and Kate Whitley’s Falling, to name but a few.

Our Chief Conductor, Mark Wigglesworth, will conduct this musical milestone on 4 December 2024 and the concert features Boris Giltburg in Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto.

The concert will be presented by Martin Handley, who also welcomed audiences to our very first Digital Concert in September 2020. Martin said “It’s one very good thing to come out of Covid, that if you can’t be with us in the hall for a concert, you can be with us among the worldwide audience online, as part of the BSO’s greater family”.
