Pier is an independent community journal that champions the people, places, events and organisations that define Dorset. As a longstanding collaborator, we were thrilled to join the magazine to launch its latest issue – at our home venue, Lighthouse, Poole – in an evening that celebrated live music, visual art and positive discussion.

Musicians from the Orchestra – violinists Mark Derudder and June Lee, viola player Melissa Doody and cellist Philip Collingham – left the audience spellbound, as they opened the night. The quartet performed Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel (arr.H.Greenwood), the first movement of Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.18, No.1, and Hans Zimmer’s Time from Inception.

Pier Journal editor Laura Williams then hosted an insightful panel discussion which included Swanage-based artist Sharon James, campaigner Will Behenna, and our Chief Executive, Dougie Scarfe OBE. They discussed what the issue’s theme – ‘Becoming’ – meant to them and the work they’re creating, in Dorset, right now. You can read articles featuring Sharon and Will in the latest issue.

We were glad to include stories from BSO Double Bass player Mike Chaffin and BSO Trustee Jonathan Clark on how live orchestral music became part of their lives. You can read about this on page 49 of the latest issue. Pier Journal is a beautiful magazine jam-packed with inspiring stories of people and places across Dorset – and celebrating the very best of culture here on the South Coast.
