The students joined during an exciting week here at the BSO, with thousands of Key Stage 2 pupils visiting Poole to experience our ‘Explore the Orchestra’ schools’ concerts! As such the students were able to get involved in all that the week entailed; joining our Participate team in the running and delivering of the concerts, stewarding, being front of house and ensuring flow of movement as schools came in and out.

They also spent time in departments across the organisation including the Library, Digital, Development and Communications teams. Here are some of their impressions of the week…

“The digital department was the stand out experience for me. I didn’t know how much goes into the livestream – you can’t drop the ball for a second and each shot has to be loaded manually. It was interesting to see all that live from that perspective. I also really liked seeing the community within the team and how they worked together.”

“I’ve seen a whole new side to music, when you go to concerts you don’t see everything backstage and what everyone does. You also don’t see how much goes into it all, with all the different departments. The stand out experience has been front of house on schools’ concerts; interacting with other people and the importance of that. It helped me to see my future.”

“I knew I loved music before but it was hard to imagine anything other than being a performer or a teacher because those are the two things you tend to see. My favourite bit was the library, which surprised me. I didn’t think I’d enjoy binding bits of music as much as I did! I liked the accuracy needed.”

We loved working with the students, hearing their thoughts and perspectives and sharing our world with them.
