After exploring how Corelli’s ‘Christmas Concerto’ gained its title, follow the fascinating story of Messiah, composed in just 24 days. It had a fraught ‘try out’ in Chester, when Handel lost his temper with the Cathedral Choir, before its premiere in Dublin. Although its initial reception was lukewarm, by the end of his life, and with arias like ‘The trumpet shall sound’, and ‘I know that my Redeemer liveth’, Handel knew he’d composed an enduring masterpiece.
