Designed for KS2 students, this thrilling and interactive concert will be presented by award-winning composer, James Redwood, and we will be joined by Mezzo-soprano singer Fizz Buckland. This year, Explore the Orchestra: Sing Out! is all about singing and using our voices. This concert will delve into how vocalists and orchestras work together to tell stories in opera, theatre and the contemporary world. Explore the Orchestra introduces the orchestral families in an accessible way and showcases music from a variety of genres.

This concert will feature two participatory elements for everyone to use their voices with the orchestra, composed especially for these concerts with schools in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole with our partners SoundStorm. Through these pieces, the audience will learn to sing and perform with the orchestra and be introduced to all the instruments that make up a symphony orchestra.

Pre-Concert CPD Session

James will be leading a FREE CPD session to teach the participatory material that will be featured in the concert, as well as giving ideas for other ways you can prepare your children. The CPD session will be held on Thursday 26 November from 4:15-5:45pm at the Portsmouth Guildhall. Further details will be sent after booking.

We expect each school attending the concert to send at least one member of staff that will be involved on the day of the concert (ideally a music co-ordinator) to attend the CPD. If you are unable to send a member of staff please let us know after booking.

Cancellation fee

We are looking forward to welcoming as many schools as possible to our concerts and want to make sure every ticket can be enjoyed. To ensure no tickets are wasted, we are introducing a cancellation fee for late cancellations. Bookings can now be amended or cancelled up to 6 weeks before the concert; after this point, changes cannot be made. This gives schools on the wait list the fair opportunity to attend the concert. Currently, when cancellations happen at the last minute, tickets often cannot be reallocated meaning schools may miss out and leave large empty gaps in the concert hall.

The fee is £2 per ticket (teacher, adult and student). Therefore, as an example, if a school with 15 reserved tickets cancelled after the 6 week deadline, they would incur a £30 cancellation fee.

We understand that exceptional circumstances can arise and will always do our best to be accommodate these. This new approach means we can manage bookings fairly, share concert information and your seating allocations earlier and make sure no one misses out!

After booking, you’ll receive an automated email confirming the exact date of your 6-week deadline. You will also receive a reminder one week before.

If you are a new school and would like more information about getting involved in these concerts, please see here.

It's a fantastic opportunity for children to experience a symphony orchestra for the first time and it's always a lot of fun!
