Increasing pressures on schools to focus on literacy and numeracy has limited opportunities to develop as a creative individual. Evidence has demonstrated that creativity is an essential skill across all industries.
The BSO KS2 Schools’ Concerts provide children with an explosion of creative energy through live orchestral music that they otherwise may not experience.
These annual concerts are based around a theme relevant to current affairs and are designed to enrich the curriculum. Presented by James Redwood, these concerts feature exciting pieces from well-known composers as well as brand new commissions designed for pupils and the Orchestra to perform together by singing and signing in Makaton. Teachers are also invited to a CPD training event in advance of the concert to learn the participatory pieces and to explore ideas for building the concert into the school curriculum.
Experiencing the incredible power of a symphony orchestra enables students to listen, perform and share music with others, inspiring the next generation of creative thinkers and expanding cultural horizons.
It’s an unmissable opportunity for the children to see live classical music that they almost certainly would not choose, or be able to afford to see at any other time. I also hope it might begin a desire to learn to play an instrument.
