Thomas Adès is recognised internationally as one of the greatest composers of our time. Over this season four of his works are programmed: a suite from his early operatic success Powder Her Face (1995), and three recent pieces, Märchentänze (2020-21), Dawn (2020) and Air – Homage to Sibelius (2021-22). An added bonus is that Adès conducts the BSO next May. In the words of BBC Radio 3 presenter, Gillian Moore, look forward to ‘startingly, utterly original music’.
Born in 1971, Adès initially came to public notice as a pianist, winning second prize in the 1989 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. From 1989 to 1992 he read music at Cambridge, establishing his name as a composer with his Chamber Symphony (1990) but it was Powder Her Face that confirmed his significance. He has been recipient of many prizes, for instance the Grawemeyer Award, and as of September this year became the Principal Guest Conductor of the Hallè. His conducting advocates include Sir Simon Rattle and Gustavo Dudamel, and among the many artists with whom Adès has collaborated are Kirill Gerstein, Anthony Marwood and Anne-Sophie Mutter.
