The opening concert for the orchestral season at the venue will take place on Tuesday 19 December and includes a new work, written especially to celebrate this new creative chapter in Bristol’s story.
Kirill Karabits leads the programme which includes a newly commissioned fanfare— entitled Beacons—by celebrated composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, heralding the return of live classical music to the city centre of Bristol. Kirill will also conduct Stravinsky’s inspirational ballet The Rite of Spring which is infused with an explosive fusion of rhythmic energy and instrumental colour. This follows successful performances with Seeta Patel Dance earlier in the season.
Joining Kirill to mark the opening of the venue is Sunwook Kim, who performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.5, The Emperor, the largest scale of all Beethoven’s concertos, this is an epic tour de force of unprecedented breadth and scale. Meanwhile, Shostakovich’s effervescent and triumphal Festive Overture shows the lighter side of an otherwise serious and introspective artist— making it perfect for any celebration!
