The project, which was conceived in partnership with Hampshire Music Hub, focussed on music that will feature in the Coronation, including, Handel’s Zadok the Priest and music by Haydn. The series of workshops reached pupils across four schools in the New Forest, and was led by BSO Associate Musician Neil Valentine. Each workshop was bespoke to the school’s established musical provision and the ages of those involved.

The pupils worked with several BSO musicians to explore the melodies and motifs of these famous pieces, and had opportunity to play instruments and create music themselves.

Did you know that His Majesty is an avid classical music lover and has personally chosen the music for the ceremony at Westminster Abbey on 6 May? The Coronation itself will see twelve newly commissioned pieces, one of which that has been commissioned by Shirley J Thompson — who is well-known to BSO audiences, having also composed a piece which was performed by BSO Resound in 2021.
