Our informal Cake Concerts are held in community centres throughout the year and feature the BSO’s Teatime Trio — harpist Eluned, cellist Kate and flautist Owain — with relaxed chamber music to boost connection and positive shared experiences through the unique power of live music.
Sue Sharpe, Participate Senior Programme Manager explained, “Cake concerts are dementia-friendly but not dementia exclusive. They are really a way of providing a daytime musical experience to those who might struggle to get to the concert hall.”
“For those feeling isolated or lonely, the concerts provide a wonderful and welcoming environment in which to socialise with others. People can come along, listen to the beautiful music and then share a couple of slices of cake, and chat too”.
Served halfway through the concert, refreshments of tea and cake provide a welcome opportunity for attendees to socialise and interact. Concerts are always held during the daytime so that they are easy to travel to, and ticket prices are kept low.
The music is relaxed and spans classical and popular favourites to appeal to all. Flautist Owain explained that “[the concert] aims to trigger memories” while cellist, Kate, said “I like hearing stories from audience members about music that has a special memory for them, or about an instrument that they play or used to play”.
A recent audience member praised the “amazing music from a trio that played exquisitely”, while another expressed the joy of “being able to clearly hear each of the instruments. The chance to watch the experts. Wonderful!”.
Others have described feeling “uplifted after the concert”, saying that “just being here was a treat”.
The next BSO Cake Concert takes places on Friday 14 February at Boldre Memorial Hall, Lymington. For more details click here
