Poland’s first composer of genius, Chopin wrote his First Piano Concerto when merely 20, in which the quintessential characteristics that made him one of the ‘greats’ of early Romanticism are apparent. Sister of Felix, Fanny Mendelssohn was thwarted in her composition ambitions by the conventions of her time, but her Overture in C reveals her lively musical personality. As for Haydn’s Symphony No. 88, it’s blest with the most effervescent finale he ever wrote.
