As Bristol Beacon’s Orchestra-in-Residence, we are thrilled to be performing a BBC Proms concert at the venue, marking the conclusion of its first year.

Kirill Karabits opens the concert with a little-known gem of Ukrainian music, Akimenko’s Angel: Poem-Nocturne. Akimenko was the first teacher of Stravinsky. This piece was an important work in his stylistic development and was based upon a poem of the same name by Mikhail Lermontov. Interestingly, the work featured at the Proms in 1926, under the baton of Henry Wood.

World famous percussionist Evelyn Glennie joins the Orchestra to play Jennifer Higdon’s exuberant Percussion Concerto, a work that presents the percussion section of the BSO interacting with the soloist. Then Knell by Iranian composer Niloufar Nourbakhsh offers a glance back to Akimenko’s Angel in its momentary, symbolic plea for peace, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 finishes the concert in evocative style as it journeys from darkness to light.

Join us at Bristol Beacon for the BBC Proms on Sunday 25 August at 5pm. You can also hear the performance live on BBC Radio 3.
