Many schools only focus on STEM (Science Technology, Engineering & Maths) subjects when providing careers advice, which doesn’t give young people a full picture of what possible career paths are available to them. Classical music can be perceived as being inaccessible and outside the scope of young people’s listening choices.
Presented by a member of the BSO Participate team, Meet the Orchestra provides students with an opportunity to learn about the business of an orchestra and about the evening’s programme and meet BSO musicians before watching them perform in a concert.
Young people get the opportunity to learn about all the skills needed on and off the stage and to run an orchestra which will give them value information on possible career pathways in the Arts. Meet the Orchestra happens before concerts that contain relevance to current music GCSE and A level syllabuses, so that they can bring their curriculum to life.
Meet the Orchestra open students’ minds to the possibilities of creative career choices, whilst making classical music easier to explore.
It was instantly engaging for the kids. Good blend of informality, fact, insight and humour.
