Our orchestra and ensembles put on over 150 concerts a year and play countless pieces of music ranging from Handel through to Pink Floyd! Whether you are a regular concert-goer or brand new to the concert hall, it is almost certain that you want to know a little bit more about what you are going to listen to. On this page we have collated some resources for you to peruse and some free events for you to attend! Remember our Youtube Channel has lots of videos from over the years on it, including previous Meet the Music videos, performances and Artist interviews!
Of the thousands of conductors to choose from, there are a few that come up time and time again – that is because they are not only brilliant composers, but also incredibly interesting people. Head over to our Composers page to get an idea of what some of our top composers of the season were/are like and find out where we are going to be featuring them next!
We have also created a number of ‘Meet the Music’ videos in which BSO Associate Dr Jon James explores several key works in our repertoire, giving you additional insight before the concert itself.
- Holst: The Planets
- Copland: Rodeo
- Mahler: Symphony No.1
- Debussy: Images
- Beethoven: Symphonies 1-5
- R.Strauss: Elektra
Whilst we produce new records every year as one of the most frequently recorded symphony orchestras in the country, new streaming software such as Spotify helps to share our music on a global platform, with 2.8 million streams in 2018.
During 2020 we had the opportunity to talk to some extraordinary artists, including Marin Alsop and our Chief Conductor, Kirill Karabits. These insightful conversations were all filmed and are available for you to catch up with below:
