Rehearsal Report – Week 1

18th September 2019

We’re off! BSO Voices is underway. Really good to see so many of you last night at Richard Taunton College and sounding great even after a few weeks off.

Last night we covered;

  • I Saw Three Ships
  • God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

I Saw Three Ships – please live your lives in 7 this week! 2,2,3 (1 2, 3 4, 5 6 7) Count it as you walk along (don’t fall over!) Have conversations in 7 (I don’t want a cup of tea). Then, just gently speak the words, under tempo, a little often and you’ll be amazed how it will go in. Remember the long vowel sound on ships please – no early ‘s’ sounds.

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen – much more straight forward! Remember the ‘pushed’ rhythms in bars 3, 7 etc… Just gently tuck into your tracks and please get this on your ears as we will be running both of these at the start of the rehearsal next week.

Next week we will work on;

  • Be Our Guest
  • God Bless Us Everyone (A Christmas Carol)

Please can you also have a good listen to these to give you a fighting chance next week!

Two small confessions on the tracks – in Beauty & the Beast there are two things to look out for. Bar 13 will start slower (solo line), gradually getting quicker from bar 21 hitting the tempo at bar 29. This doesn’t really affect the choir parts. The second one does affect you – bar 223 is marked rit (gradually slowing…) which we don’t do enough of on the track – there will be more time!

Huge thanks to Teresa, her brother Nick, Nick from the BSO office and Katherine (our signer) for the work on the CDs. Lots of lovely comments about the quality of them, the fact there are dynamics and that they are performed with style and feeling. So important to help you learn them properly!

Thanks to Doug, our Choir Manager for sorting all the new ties, lost property (what’s on ‘Doug’s Rail’ could become a weekly feature!) and so on. Thanks to Rachel for looking after all our social media – please do get active and post pictures, comments etc – it all helps! Thanks as always to Marie too for the breaktime refreshments – much needed and appreciated!

And finally, to the team from the BSO who came along last night, Anthony, Ben, Chris and Alastair. Thanks for everything you all have done to have made last night possible.

Have a great week and see you next week!
