Why did you choose to play the double bass?
I was inspired to take up the double bass by a friend who lived across the road. I already played guitar (only self taught though), and since they have four strings in common it was easy to pick up.

When did you join the BSO?
I joined the BSO in 1988, after a lot of time spent as an extra - a good thing as I got to know the ropes a little!

What other instrument would you like to play?
If I had to swap instruments I’d play the cor anglais, or trumpet, or if it had to be another stringed instrument it would be the viola.

If you weren't a musician what would you like to do?
If I had to do something other than music for a living I’d probably learn to drive a truck!

What do you do in your spare time?
My hobbies are mostly looking after our two dogs. Walking, training, playing with and grooming, all take up lots of time! Ballet (very badly!!) has recently become a fun thing to do. Given more time and money I’d start horse riding again, but there’s a limit to what you can do.
