Instantly recognisable tunes abound in this feast of melodic masterpieces. Verdi’s plaintive overture was used as the theme for Jean de Florette and a famous beer advert, and Mascagni’s Intermezzo was also used in an ad campaign - this time for tissues! Rachmaninov wrote the most ravishingly beautiful and lyrical melody for his Vocalise, whilst the big tune from his ever-popular Second Piano Concerto is forever associated with the film Brief Encounter. And finally, there’s Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations - what more rousingly patriotic theme can there be?
This concert is part of the Saturday Nights at Seven Series, each one brimming with some of the best music ever written. Find out more here
