- Concert Cancelled Due to Weather
It is with regret that Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has announced the cancellation of its outdoor fireworks proms concert at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, on Saturday 21 July. Following discussion with English Heritage as to the effect of the recent bad weather on the lawn where the concert traditionally takes place, it has become apparent that the site has become unfit for the expected audience of thousands.
Both we and English Heritage had hoped that the lawn, and nearby field used for car parking, would have the chance to dry out before the concert next week. However, given the continued unsettled weather forecast we feel it would be better not to put this beautiful setting at risk. The BSO has never cancelled an outdoor concert before, and it is an indication of our concerns that we have taken this unprecedented step. We had explored numerous contingency measures and were hoping to make something work – however safety remained paramount and although the event day may end up being OK – the conditions for the build of infrastructure over the next few days is just not good enough.
We apologise for any disappointment that this decision will cause. We know that the concert is very special to many people and that many of our fans have attended for many years. I am personally very saddened as I have run the events since the very first one in 1995. I very much hope that we will be back in 2013.
We are of course happy to offer a full refund on tickets purchased via the BSO direct, The County Press Shop, Quay Arts Centre and Osborne House. (You will not be able to receive a refund from these box offices.) You will need to return your tickets to the BSO offices only.
